Mamaroneck Pensions Top $100,000 a Year

18 retired Mamaroneck School District employees in the New York State Teachers Retirement System have annual pensions exceeding $100,000 a year, according to the State Comptrollers Office and the Empire Center for New York State Policy.
For example, Sarah Tate, a former Assistant Superintendent who retired in 2005, is earning a pension of over $142,000 a year. Also earning more than $142,000 is Dr. Sherry King, who retired as Superintendent in 2006. Larry Keane, Assistant Principal at Hommocks until retiring in 2009, returned a year later as interim Principal, while pulling down a pension of $121,930.12.
A chart of the top 25 pension earnings is below.
Most of these retirees served the District with distinction and worked hard to educate our children; this illustrates the economic challenges inherent in the system, not any wrongdoing on the part of these educators.
Still, efforts to meet these obligations are having an effect on school budgets and taxes now and will well into the future.
According to New York Assemblyman George Latimer (D-91st )”It’s sobering when you see the actual numbers. These arrangements have been in place 20 or 25 years, and now we are beginning to realize what kind of money was set aside to honor the commitments that they made, for as long as they live.”
Latimer explains these former employees were “Tier One, the original pension plan.” A District employee coming on board now receives less benefit. Each budget cycle has changed the benefit level. The current system is known as Tier 5.
